In 1988 Jackie established The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation to help the youth of Hong Kong. The creation of the foundation was Jackie's way of fulfilling a vow he'd made to a Red Cross volunteer who had given him aid when he was a youngster. When Jackie asked how he could repay the Red Cross, the representative told him to return the favor to someone in need when he was able to. Jackie has been doing that through the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation since 1988.
Over the years the JCCF has helped countless youth by providing funding and scholarships for a wide array of causes. In 1997, the foundation bestowed the largest single donation to date which resulted in the construction of the Jackie Chan Gymnasium at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. To celebrate the Grand Opening of the gymnasium, an inter-collegiate basketball tournament was organized. Men and women from eight colleges were invited to compete for the Jackie Chan Challenge Cup. Since 1998, the winners have been awarded with a specially designed trophy featuring a model of Jackie's hand holding a gold basketball.
Over the years the Jackie Chan Challenge Cup has added table-tennis and soccer to the events and this year plans to add volleyball. The tournament is hosted by Lingnan University and participants have included Hong Kong Baptist University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Shue Yan College.
