JULY 2, 2008

by Katharine Schroeder
Well, not really "On the Road With Jackie Chan" this time; it should be more like "Down the Road..." Jackie was filming a public service announcement for the Hong Kong government just a few minutes away from his office. Incredibly, the weather was perfect, although it was quite hot. The skies were brilliant blue and the clouds looked like they were made-to-order just for the filming. Jackie always says that he has great luck when it comes to the weather and today was no exception. Since he had to wear three layers of clothing in the searing heat, he was wishing that it was just a little bit cooler, but he never complained. In fact, when reporters asked him how he was doing, he expressed concern for them and offered them water.
Although there's not much to report about a long day on this kind of shoot, there were so many great opportunities for photos that it seemed a good idea to put them here in the Scrapbook:

Jackie stands under the blazing sun at the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade in Hong Kong.

Like many other Hong Kong people do, Jackie makes good use of an umbrella on a sunny day.

Jackie was completely captivated by the clouds and the beautiful skyline. He took several shots to create a panorama.

And here's Jackie's remarkable panorama of the Hong Kong skyline. Click to make it bigger.

Jackie smiles after taking the photo. He knew he had a winner!

Jackie takes a look at Victoria Harbor. When filming moved to beneath the promende overhang, Jackie was quite happy to be out of the sun. However, the conditions for photography became nearly impossible to manage...a bright background with no flash allowed meant that Jackie was in silhouette. All the fans who were taking photos (as well as some of the news photographers) were complaining about the lighting!

Overexposed background; underexposed Jackie.
On the set we ran into a few old friends. Some you may know, some you may not, so I want to introduce you.
JC Stunt Team member Han Guan Hua was on hand to help the cameras set up for all of the moves Jackie would have to make with the large staff he was holding. Guan Hua performed the movements over and over again for the cameraman until everything could be positioned just right. Guan Hua is very proficient in the use of weapons, so he made it look easy. But it was very very hot! In true JC team fashion, he also never complained.

Han Guan Hua, talented martial artist, actor, and stuntman.
And a really really nice guy.

Do you recognize the man behind this sizeable fist? It's Ken Lo, of course.

Ken posing in front of the Hong Kong skyline.

Fibe and Maggie. Most of you know Fibe, the woman who writes Jackie's diaries from his dictations. Maggie is a make-up artist who has been working with Jackie for many years.
More photos of Jackie:

Uh oh. Jackie spots a baby.

The perfect recipe for great pictures: Mix one Jackie Chan with one baby and stir.

This little girl is the daughter of the art director.

Baby's patience begins to disappear.

Uh oh.

Uncle Jackie provides a shoulder to cry on.

Jackie cannot resist having a quick bite of baby arm.

Don't worry, Jackie didn't hurt the baby; he is very gentle. She was crying anyway. He was just enthralled with how chubby her arms were.

A lovely little baby arm.

Jackie relaxes between takes by checking out the camera equipment.

Recording his diary with Fibe.

All day long, fans gathered to watch the filming.

From the look on his face, you would think Ken Lo was caught misbehaving.

But he was just being a nice guy...bringing water to the reporters.
At one point during the day, Jackie asked me if I'd been to his store on the promenade. "Of course," I replied.
"Did you take photos? To show the fans?"
"Well, I suppose I did..."
"You should take some photos and put them on the website," he said.
"Well, okay...but do you mean right now?"
I looked at his face; he meant right now. It's true that I was in no position to complain about walking half a mile in the blazing sun when Jackie had been standing in it for hours. So I walked to the store.
If you visit Hong Kong, you should make it a point to stop by Jackie's shop at the promenade in Tsim Sha Tsui. You can buy souvenirs and also see some rare photos and other interesting things. Next to the store you will find two Buddy Bears - these are Jackie's bears. They have been recently redesigned since their original artwork finally succumed to the harsh elements on the waterfront. Here are some photos:

The Buddy Bears stand guard at Jackie's shop on the waterfront.

A brand new paint job for Jackie's bear. Jackie's original idea was to take designs from the Kids Corner Buddy Bear collection and have artists reproduce them on this bear. That turned out to be more difficult than anyone thought, so instead the artist took elements from many of the designs at JackieChanKids.com and painted them. Several designs are reproduced in their entirety, while parts of some designs are painted inside hearts. The theme? Love and Peace!

This is the second bear. You might recognize the design; it is reproduced from the award winning artwork of 9 year-old Lau Tsun Ming of China. Tsun Ming won a competition sponsored by the United Nations and it intrigued Jackie because of its message about taking care of the environment. Jackie saw the drawing in the newspaper and invited Tsun Ming to visit him on the set of a commercial shoot in 2006. It was Jackie's idea to reproduce the design on his Buddy Bear.

At just before 5:00, the shoot was over and it was time to go back to the office. Jackie got changed and after stopping to say a quick hello to fans who were waiting outside his tent, we headed back to Waterloo Road. As we pulled away, the crowds surrounded Jackie's car. This is something that always worries him - that people will get hurt trying to get a photo or to wave hello. Guan Hua helped to keep everyone safe and soon we were on our way.

Getting ready to leave.

Jackie greets fans on his way out.

Jackie points at the camera the woman in pink is holding. Is that a Polaroid? Yes!

Fibe
